DECADES of making a difference
History of the Great American MeatOut
Since 1985, MeatOut has brought people together around the world to celebrate animals and discover the possibilities of plant-based living. Every March 20, people across the U.S. and in more than 20 countries welcome spring by choosing plant-based foods, sharing delicious meals, and inspiring others to give them a try. What began as a grassroots campaign has grown into a global movement, encouraging people everywhere to make kinder, healthier, and more sustainable choices—one meal at a time.

MeatOut through the years
MeatOut has taken just about every form imaginable—from lively food tastings, cooking demos, and community tables to festivals, special events, and plant-based celebrations. Over the years, even members of Congress and their staff have gathered for MeatOut lunches in Washington, DC, while governors and mayors across the country have officially recognized MeatOut with proclamations. The message has hit the streets, too, appearing on billboards, buses, television, and in newspapers nationwide. However people choose to celebrate, MeatOut is all about making plant-based eating visible, inviting, and fun.
MeatOut brings together people who care about animals, their health, and the planet—and has helped inspire a much bigger movement toward plant-based eating. From major health organizations and universities to physicians, advocates, and celebrities like Paul McCartney, the idea of eating more plants and less meat has reached millions of people. Join the movement this MeatOut and discover just how delicious making a difference can be!
