MeatOut Making Waves with Cattle Ranchers in the U.S. West
When Colorado Governor Jared Polis officially proclaimed March 20, 2021, as MeatOut Day, he probably didn’t expect quite so much beef about it. The proclamation ignited an immediate and highly publicized backlash from cattle ranchers and livestock groups, with one state senator denouncing it on the Senate floor and ranchers calling it a “slap in the face” to their industry. Opponents organized competing “Meat-In” events, counties issued their own pro-meat proclamations, and more than 100 barbecues and related events were reportedly planned across the state. What began as an invitation to try plant-based eating for just one day became a statewide controversy—and put MeatOut squarely in the headlines.

Celebrate MeatOut Day
Meatout is celebrated across the globe on March 20th. Animal-welfare organization Farm Animal Rights Movement coordinates the campaign, educating the general public on the health, environmental, and ethical benefits of living cruelty-free.
